  • What kinds of books do you carry?
Our sweet spot is literary fiction, creative nonfiction, memoir, and poetry. The definition of literary fiction and essays can be fuzzy, but generally, it’s artistic work that emphasizes style, character, and the exploration of big ideas over simple entertainment. That said, we think it should be entertaining too. We know different folks have different tastes, so we try to carry a variety and also carry a small selection of other genres. While this location is geared toward adult readers, we carry a few books to appeal to children and YA readers too.
  • How often do you change out the stock?
On a rotating basis about once a month, but it could be slightly longer or shorter depending on how quickly particular books sell out.
  • Are you open to suggestions?
    Definitely. Just reach out.
  • The book I want is out of stock. Will you restock it?
Possibly. Feel free to send us an email or contact us via the contact form on our website.
  • I paid, but there was a problem in receiving my book. What do I do?
The sensors at the bottom of the machine tell us when a book drops. If you try to purchase a book and it gets stuck or doesn't drop, you will not be charged. However, if you want to double check, feel free to send us an email (Lauren@litboxbooks.com). We have an app that shows us every canceled transaction, and we can confirm quickly that you won't be charged.
  • Are you planning to expand?
Yes, if this location does well. Please buy a book or 3 and help us get there!
  • Who do you consider a DMV-area author?
Generally, anyone living within about 30 miles of Washington, DC, but if you have questions, feel free to ask.
  • How do I get my book in the machine?
We are assembling a team of readers to make initial decisions on what to carry next. As part of that process, we will solicit recommendations from other local literary organizations to ensure we are thinking broadly across the District/DMV. We also have a new submissions form under the Contact tab, where you can submit a book for consideration.
